New chicks!

A much anticipated (and feared lost or forgotten) box of chicks showed up today.

A quick dip of their beaks to make sure everyone knows how to drink properly and the chickies were all settled in and zooming around in their brooder trough.

They passed inspection by Ian

And cuteness test by Lauren

These little fuzzballs are layer-type birds that will eventually join our free-range layer flock. For the next few weeks though, their home is in the brooder trough in the sunroom adjacent to my bedroom. Nothing like trying to sleep at night with a background orchestra of little peeps!

Planting seeds in the sunroom

I'm running way, way behind on starting seedlings for the garden this year but since we live in a desert with such a short growing season, any extra head start the seeds get is to my advantage. Lauren and I planted many, trays of future yummy salad greens, squashes and flowers. For the first time this year we used old egg cartons to start seeds which seemed to work very nicely and as an added bonus there is a little flap that makes labeling a breeze!

Out to pasture

We gave the calves and their mamas a few days to relax after branding but they were more than ready for spring turnout today and we had a great crew of longtime friends out as helpers.

Here's Amy getting a quick primer on driving the ATVs

Ranch hand Dara drives us gals in the farm truck while Amy and the boys took off on ATVs.

Then off to the Little Hay Shed where Ian loads up a few bales to tempt the cows along.

It didn't take long for the cows to mob the truck, much to the delight of Ian, Lauren and Dara.

Once the truck started moving, those old cows followed right along.

Nice job team. Job well done!

Never fails

There are always those few holdout cows that don't calve, don't calve, don't calve for weeks. We finally decide to go on and schedule branding without them and I'll be darned, there is always a brand new calf that first day post-branding. Never fails.

We spotted Spits and her little bull calf (the late calves always seem to be bulls) off in the sagebrush the next day.

Branding day 2012

Lloyd may have come down sick on branding morning but we had a great crew and made good time running all the calves through the chute. Now everybody is notched, tagged, vaccinated, banded and branded and ready for turnout in a few days.

The day went by so fast in fact that I only took a single photo the whole day. Chuck looks just as skeptical about the day's events as the little calf.
